grade of C or better in MAC 2312, MAC 2512 or MAC 3473.

TEXT:<\/h3>\n

An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers, 5th edition<\/a><\/strong> by Niven, Zuckerman and Montgomery.<\/p>\n

MATERIAL TO BE COVERED:<\/h3>\n

The following is expected to be covered. <\/p>

\nWEEKS 1 AND 2 (Jan 9-20): Selections from

\nSection 1.1, Section 1.2 up to Euclidean Algorithm.<\/p>

\nWEEKS 3 AND 4 (Jan 23 – Feb 1) : Selections from

\nSections 1.2 and 1.3 from page 16 to page 25. <\/p>

\nFIRST TEST Fri, Feb 3<\/p>

\nWEEKS 5 AND 6 (Feb 6-17): Selections from

\nSection 1.3, from pages 26-34 including problems

\n(time permitting)<\/p>

\nWEEKS 7 AND 8 (Feb 20 – Mar 1): Selections from

\nSections 1.4 and 2.1, with some problems. <\/p>

\nSECOND TEST Fri, Mar 3<\/p>

\nWEEKS 9 and 10 (Mar 6 \u2013 Mar 10, Mar 20-24):

\nSelections from Sections 2.1, 2.2 from pages 35-50 ,

\nincluding problems (tentative, time permitting)<\/p>

\nWEEK 11-12 (Mar 27 – Apr 5) Selections from Sections 2.3,

\n2.6, and 2.7, 2.8 (tentative, time permitting)<\/p>

THIRD TEST Fri, Apr 7 <\/p>

\n3.1, 3.2, 3.6, 4.2, 4.3 (tentative, time permitting)<\/p>

GRADING:<\/h3>\n

\nGRADING SCALE

\nNo letter grades will be assigned to any of

\nthe four tests. However, after the

\nscores of the four tests are added, letter

\ngrades for the course will be assigned.

\nThey are expected* to be assigned as per the

\nfollowing scale [square brackets indicate closed intervals]!:

\nA [96%-100%]

\nA- [92%-95%

\nB+ [88%-91%]

\nB [84%-87%

\nB- [80%-83%]<\/p>

\nNOTE: Regarding the interval [80, 100], I have divided

\nit into five equal sub-intervals for the five letter grades.<\/p>

\nC+ [75%-79%]

\nC [65%-74%]

\nC- [60%-64%

\nD+[55%-59%]

\nD [50%-54%]

\nD- [45%-49%]

\nE below 45%<\/p>

\n*I say \u201cexpected\u201d above because I expect the

\nclass average to be around 80%. <\/p>

The course grade will be based on

\nFour in-class tests each worth 25% of the grade.

\nTests are not cumulative.

\n4 x 25% = 100% total<\/p>\n
