Research & Teaching

I regularly teach classes on domestic politics in Russia, Russian foreign policy, and elections outside the United States. My current book manuscript, Russia versus European Liberalism, investigates Russia’s assault on Europe’s liberal values. The work demonstrates Russia’s ability to capitalize on its position within the Council of Europe while also revealing the roles that Russia-sympathizers played in subverting the organization’s core values. Party Politics in Russia and Ukraine (2022) illustrates just how different politics in Russia and Ukraine were prior to Russia’s 2104 acts of aggression. Specifically, it demonstrates that how differences in regime type determined the effects that major electoral system changes had on the behavior of parties and legislators in the two countries. In The Regional Roots of Russia’s Political Regime (2017), Bill Reisinger and I use electoral politics at the national and subnational levels to investigate the resurgence of authoritarianism in Russia. Elections by Design (2006), meanwhile, examines the origins of subnational legislative electoral systems in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
