Mathematical Perseverance, or, Try to Hear What the Mathematics Is Trying to Tell You

ABSTRACT:  I have over the years, often failed to follow the advice in my subtitle.  In this talk, I hope to describe several research projects that ran aground because someone did not listen hard enough.  I’ll begin with Euler and end with a recent adventure taken from the pages of OEIS (Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences).
