Finite Time Blow-Up and “Ecological” Damping: Applications to Invasive Species Control

Abstract: In this talk I will present some recent finite time blow-up results in heat and wave equations, as a lead into studying certain explosive invasive populations, such as the Burmese python in South Florida. I will next introduce the idea of “ecological” damping as a means of controlling such invasive populations. These novel controls have the advantage of avoiding non-target effects due to classical chemical and biological control. I will conclude with current and future directions in the biological control of invasive species.
