{"id":22,"date":"2012-09-05T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T15:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/template\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:53:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:53:41","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/caycedo\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<section class=\"fullwidth-text-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container px-0 pt-5\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-start\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>I have been doing long term comparative research on\u00a0<strong>historical ecology<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>history of science<\/strong>.\u00a0The main research questions\u00a0\u00a0for my long term perspective of historical ecology include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why and how religion defines the management of risk in pre-industrial societies?<\/li>\n<li>Why and how disasters have shaped the environment and the development of societies?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Why do risky societies collapse?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For case studies, I have conducted research in Colombia (Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Serrania de San Jacinto, Mesay River drainage, Trapecio Amazonico), in Ecuador (Julcuy area, Manabi, and Galapagos), and in Peru (Huaraz-Caraz).\u00a0 In the last three years I have focused\u00a0my research\u00a0in Ecuador and Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Another line of research derived from historical ecology is what I call &#8220;plants&#8217; social lives&#8221;; I have been paying attention to the interaction of specific species of plants and how they shape our human behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>On a social\u00a0<b>history of science<\/b>, my focus has been on issues surrounding the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why has Latin American archaeology developed a nationalistic perspective?<\/li>\n<li>What role do German nationalist approaches\u00a0play in anthropology and archaeology, such as in Latin American Archaeology?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How can we explain the acceptance of colonialist and imperialist archaeological agendas in the history of archaeology?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To study the\u00a0Colonialism and Nationalist perspective, I look at the main agents of past colonialist and nationalist approaches who were German and Austrian researchers, such as Max Uhle, Otto Shultz-Kamphenkel, Erasmus (Gerardo) Reichel-Dolmatoff, and Max Schmidt. These last two researchers are the focus of my more recent works.
