I am an Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics as well as the Director of the Spanish Heritage Language Program at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spanishandportuguese.ufl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Florida<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am an applied linguist who studies and cares deeply about Spanish heritage speaker bilingualism. In my work, not only am I intentional about raising critical language awareness, I am also&nbsp;committed to&nbsp;dispelling negative and simplistic ideologies about minoritized bilinguals and their linguistic practices.&nbsp;I teach, research, and speak widely about these issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Areas of Interest\/Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My primary research interest is Spanish\u00a0heritage speaker bilingualism. Over the past few years, I have led or assisted with\u00a0the publication of over 60 research\u00a0papers. My\u00a0work on this topic has appeared in leading international academic journals such as\u00a0<em>Applied Linguistics, Studies in Second Language Acquisition,\u00a0<\/em><br><em>Research Methods<\/em>\u00a0<em>in Applied Linguistics,\u00a0Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, Heritage Language Journal, and Foreign Language Annals\u00a0(among others)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a teacher, I am passionate about the pursuit of a more equitable, less oppressive, and more critically conscious education.\u00a0 As a mentor, I seek to support students in achieving their personal and academic goals, whatever those may be.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As testimony of my personal and professional commitment to the field, in 2014, I founded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.northwestern.edu\/nsshl2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language<\/a>,\u00a0which has since become an annual event in the field of heritage speaker bilingualism. In 2026, the symposium will be held at Texas Tech University\u00a0(Lubbock, TX).\u00a0\u00a0I am also the founder and\u00a0 Editor-in-chief of the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.upress.ufl.edu\/shl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Spanish Heritage Language\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>journal, an international refereed journal co-published by the University of Florida Press and the Department of Spanish &amp; Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For my collective efforts in teaching, research and service, I have received a number of awards. Among these, the more notable being the\u00a0Colonel Allen R. and Margaret G.
