Specific research interests include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Comparative genomics and molecular evolution<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phylogenetics and systematics<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Patterns of gene duplication and gene loss<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phylogenetic theory<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My complete publication\u00a0list can be obtained from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=31XPDbYAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Google Scholar<\/a><\/strong>. Information about the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ufl.edu\/earlybird\">Early Bird<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0project to reconstruct avian evolution and the UF portion of the crocodilian genome project are available on web pages that I maintain. My current research emphasizes the use of\u00a0<strong>computational and mathematical approaches<\/strong>\u00a0to understand evolution at various levels ranging from genes to whole organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching and Mentoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My\u00a0teaching foci are genetics and genomics. If you are interested in working with me for graduate school please read about the Braun-Kimball lab group and my research and mentoring philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I recieved my Ph.D. in Biology from the University of New Mexico in 1997. Before I joined the University of Florida Zoology faculty in 2001 I worked at the Ohio State University and the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) in Santa Fe, NM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ph.D. reseach focused on the control of growth and proliferation in the yeast\u00a0Saccharomyces cerevisiae.\u00a0Margaret Werner-Washburne (UNM Biology) was my mentor.<\/li>\n<li>Post-doctoral research on fungal genomics as part of\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Neurospora<\/em>\u00a0genome project. I worked at the National Center for Genome Resources in Santa Fe, NM and the University of New Mexico with\u00a0Donald Natvig\u00a0(UNM\u00a0Biology)<\/li>\n<li>Post-doctoral research on the function and evolution of plant transcription factors.\u00a0I worked with Erich Grotewold in the OSU Department of\u00a0Plant Biology. While at\u00a0 OSU I was supported by a USDA post-doctoral fellowship.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I am currently a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Florida. I am also a graduate faculty member of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufgi.ufl.edu\/\">UF Genetics Institute<\/a>.
