We sequenced mitochondrial\u00a0<\/sup>DNA (mtDNA) from cytochrome\u00a0b<\/i>\u00a0<\/sup>(cyt\u00a0b<\/i>) and the\u00a0<\/sup>control region (CR)\u00a0<\/sup>for all five extant species\u00a0<\/sup>in the genus\u00a0Tragopan<\/i>.\u00a0<\/sup>We incorporated information\u00a0<\/sup>on comparative patterns\u00a0<\/sup>and rates of molecular\u00a0<\/sup>evolution into phylogenetic\u00a0<\/sup>analyses, using both a\u00a0<\/sup>single-gene and a\u00a0<\/sup>combined data approach.\u00a0<\/sup>Sequence variability was\u00a0<\/sup>distributed heterogeneously\u00a0<\/sup>among the three domains\u00a0<\/sup>of CR and the three codon\u00a0<\/sup>positions of cyt\u00a0b<\/i>,\u00a0<\/sup>but the two genes evolved\u00a0<\/sup>at comparable rates,\u00a0<\/sup>on average, and produced\u00a0<\/sup>concordant topologies\u00a0<\/sup>independent of the method\u00a0<\/sup>used for phylogenetic\u00a0<\/sup>reconstructions. Phylogenetic\u00a0<\/sup>trees suggest that\u00a0<\/sup>Tragopan includes two\u00a0<\/sup>main evolutionary lineages\u00a0<\/sup>grouping\u00a0caboti<\/i>–temminckii<\/i>\u00a0<\/sup>(clade A), and\u00a0<\/sup>blythii<\/i>–satyra<\/i>\u00a0(clade B).\u00a0<\/sup>A shorter CR sequence\u00a0<\/sup>from one museum\u00a0<\/sup>sample could not consistently\u00a0<\/sup>resolve the position of\u00a0<\/sup>T. melanocephalus<\/i>.\u00a0<\/sup>The mtDNA phylogeny is\u00a0<\/sup>better supported than alternative\u00a0<\/sup>topologies inferred\u00a0<\/sup>from morphological and\u00a0<\/sup>behavioral traits and is\u00a0<\/sup>compatible with a mechanism\u00a0<\/sup>of allopatric speciation\u00a0<\/sup>of\u00a0Tragopan<\/i>\u00a0in two\u00a0<\/sup>different episodes about\u00a0<\/sup>4 and 2 million years\u00a0<\/sup>ago. In those periods,\u00a0<\/sup>the vicariant events\u00a0<\/sup>that might have fostered\u00a0<\/sup>allopatric speciation of\u00a0<\/sup>Tragopan<\/i>\u00a0are represented\u00a0<\/sup>by landscape changes\u00a0<\/sup>that affected the Indohimalayan\u00a0<\/sup>region after the\u00a0<\/sup>sudden rising of the\u00a0<\/sup>Himalayas less then 8\u00a0<\/sup>million years ago,\u00a0<\/sup>and by climatic fluctuations\u00a0<\/sup>during the Pleistocene less\u00a0<\/sup>than 2 million years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
