Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

M. Elizabeth Ginway is Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida. She is author of Brazilian Science Fiction: Cultural Myths and Nationhood in the Land of the Future (2004), which was nominated for the MLA Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize by Bucknell University Press. This book was published in Portuguese translation in Brazil in 2005. Several essays on Brazilian science fiction and fantasy also appeared in a volume called Vis\u00e3o Alien\u00edgena [Alien Vision] (Devir, 2010), and she co-edited a volume of essays, Latin American Science Fiction: Theory and Practice (Palgrave, 2012) with J. Andrew Brown. She has published articles in Alambique, Brasil\/Brazil, Extrapolation, Femspec, Foundation, Hispania, Luso-Brazilian Review, Modern Language Studies, Paradoxa, Revista Iberoamericana, and Science Fiction Studies. In addition to teaching nineteenth- and twentieth-century Brazilian literature, she has extended her SF interests to Spanish America, and her comparative study on science fiction and fantasy, Sexuality, Cyborgs and the Undead: The Body in Brazilian and Mexican Science Fiction\u201d was published by Vanderbilt University Press in December of 2020. In October 2021 she organized the symposium “Latin America Writes Back 2.0” with Terry Harpold of the Department of English, and they are currently editing a series of essays on political and ecological crisis as portrayed in Latin American science fiction for the University Press of Florida. In addition to writing the introduction to Coelho Neto’s Esfinge\/Sphnix for the MLA series on translation and gender studies, she is also working on a translation of Brazil’s early cyberpunk novel Silicone XXI (1985) for Vanderbilt University Press. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
