Course Description

MAS 4105 is a 4 credit course on linear algebra that stresses
the theoretical aspects of the following topics:

  • vectors and vector spaces
  • linear transformations
  • linear equations and matrices
  • determinants
  • inner products
  • eigenvalues
  • convexity (if time permits)

The course serves both as a transition for the mathematics major from a study of techniques into more conceptual mathematics, and as a coherent foundation in linear algebra for engineering and science majors. The student is expected to reason through and coherently write up proofs of theorems, as well as develop computational skills. However, computational skills are not stressed as much as in MAS 3114, Computational Linear Algebra.

MAS 4105 is designed to serve majors in mathematics and those engineering and science students interested in the theoretical aspects of the subject.
