Calculus 3, and C or better in either MAS 3300 or MHF 3202

- Linear Algebra, 4th edition, by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence,
Prentice Hall, 2003. - We will cover most of Chapters 1 – 6.
Course Description
- MAS 4105 is a 4 credit course on linear algebra that stresses
the theoretical aspects of the following topics:- Vector Spaces (3 weeks)
- Linear Transformations (3 weeks)
- Elementary Matrix Operations and Systems of Linear Equations (3 weeks)
- Determinants (1 week)
- Diagonalization (2 weeks)
- Inner Product Spaces and Applications to Linear Models (2 weeks)
- convexity (if time permits)
The course serves both as a transition for the mathematics major from a study of techniques into more conceptual mathematics, and as a coherent foundation in linear algebra for engineering and science majors. The student is expected to reason through and coherently write up proofs of theorems, as well as develop computational skills. However, computational skills are not stressed as much as in MAS 3114, Computational Linear Algebra.
MAS 4105 is designed to serve majors in mathematics and those engineering and science students interested in the theoretical aspects of the subject.
