Office Hours

Monday 8th period (3:00 – 3:50pm), Wednesday 7th period (1:55 – 2:45pm), and Friday 3rd period (9:35 – 10:25am). Also by appointment.

Prerequisites

MAS 3300 or MHF 3202 with a minimum grade of B, or MAS 4105 with a minimum grade of C.

Textbook

Contemporary Abstract Algebra, 8th Edition, by Joe Gallian.

Course Description

MAS 4301 is a 3 credit course on Abstract Algebra which focuses mainly on group theory and ring theory. Topics include sets and mappings, groups and subgroups, homomorphisms and isomorphisms, permutations, rings and domains, arithmetic properties of domains, and fields. This course requires facility in writing proofs.

Homework

Suggested homework problems will be assigned. Some of the homework will be checked and form part of the quiz grade.

Quizzes

There will be several quizzes given throughout the semester.

Exams (Written medical documentation is required for makeup exams.)

Exam 1: Friday, September 26

Exam 2: Friday, October 31

Exam 3: Monday, December 8

Makeup Quizzes: Wednesday, December 10

Makeup Exams: Friday, December 19, 10am – 12noon

Grade:

Grade is based on Exams (25 + 25 + 25 = 75%) and Quizzes (25%).
Lowest Quiz score will be dropped.

Grading scale: A 90%; A- 87%; B+ 83%; B 80%; etc.
