Garvan<\/dt><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dd>408 Little Hall<br>\n(352) 294-2305<br>\nfgarvan@ufl.edu<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><dt>Office Hours<\/dt><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dd>Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (11:00am &#8211; 12:00pm).<br>\nAlso available by appointment.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><dt>Prerequisites<\/dt><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dd>Grade of C or better in<br>\nCalculus 3, and C or better in either MAS 3300 or MHF 3202<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><dt>Textbook<\/dt><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dd><i>Linear Algebra, <\/i> 4th edition, by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence,<br>\nPrentice Hall, 2003.<\/dd>\n<dd>We will cover most of Chapters 1 &#8211; 6.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><dt>Course Description<\/dt><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<dl>\n<dd>MAS 4105 is a 4 credit course on linear algebra that stresses<br>\nthe theoretical aspects of the following topics:\n<ul>\n<li>Vector Spaces  (3 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Linear Transformations (3 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Elementary Matrix Operations and Systems of Linear Equations (3 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Determinants (1 week)<\/li>\n<li>Diagonalization (2 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Inner Product Spaces and Applications to Linear Models (2 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>convexity (if time permits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The course serves both as a transition for the mathematics major from a study of techniques into more conceptual mathematics, and as a coherent foundation in linear algebra for engineering and science majors. The student is expected to reason through and coherently write up proofs of theorems, as well as develop computational skills.
