Background

Falcon Restrepo is a doctoral candidate in Hispanic Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. He is currently finishing his thesis entitled “Language contact and divergent paths of variation: bilingual rhotics in two island communities of the Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia”. His dissertation focuses on a language contact situation in the Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia, where Spanish and an English-based Creole, known as Islander, coexist within the same territory. He studies sociophonetic variation as one of the outcomes of language contact phenomena. He is also interested in language policies, attitudes, and practices at the public level through the linguistic landscape of contact scenarios. He has also been engaged on research concerning Spanish SLA and instruction, particularly on the acquisition of variable forms and the improvement of language teaching methodologies.
