{"id":22,"date":"2012-09-05T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T15:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/template\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2020-06-17T19:34:53","modified_gmt":"2020-06-17T23:34:53","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/gallmanm\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of the fall of 2015 I had three projects underway.<\/p>\n<h3>As of the summer of 2020 the first two items had long since been completed and the book on Democrats is in its final stages.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>I have just recently completed an essay on the New York Civil War Diarist Maria Lydig Daly.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>(1) \u00a0\u201cThe Election of 1864: Revisiting that \u2018Blind Memo\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is a paper \u00a0delivered at the Huntington Library in September..<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>(2)\u00a0\u201cEnlistment, Conscription and Duty in the Civil War\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is an essay for the <em>Civil War Monito<\/em>r. \u00a0It revisits some themes from my recent monograph.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>(<\/strong><strong>3)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"> A book project on the northern Democrats during the Civil War.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This will be my central focus for the next year or two. \u00a0I am interested in using the example of the Civil War Democrats as a way to revisit how we think about, and write about, political history. \u00a0One goal is to attempt a new integration of &#8220;traditional&#8221; political topics (elections etc) with the story of politics in the streets (and in the parlors). \u00a0Another goal is to figure out how to tell a compelling story about folks who we (or at least I) think of as being on the &#8220;wrong side of history.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of the fall of 2015 I had three projects underway.
