Education, Major Positions and\u00a0 Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born and raised in Switzerland,educated in Switzerland (Universities of Basel and Berne, doctorat-\u00e8s-lettres,1965) and France (Sorbonne), Raymond Gay-Crosier is a specialist in modern French literature. He taught one year at Trent University (Peterborough,Ont.,Canada), before joining the University of Florida as an Associate\u00a0 Professor in 1967and was promoted to Full Professor in 1973. After a ten-year\u00a0 stint as Graduate Coordinator\u00a0 of French (1970 to 1980), he was elected Chair\u00a0 of the Department\u00a0 of\u00a0 Romance Languages &amp; Literatures and later reelected\u00a0 for three additional\u00a0 terms (1981-1993).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past\u00a0 and current research and professional\u00a0 service activities\u00a0 include\u00a0 the publication of books and articles on French\u00a0 literature and other\u00a0 topics (see below) and several editorial positions :\u00a0 Principal co-editor of vols. I and II, and editor-in-chief of\u00a0 vols. III and IV of the\u00a0<i>\u0152uvres compl\u00e8tes\u00a0<\/i>by A. Camus (Paris, Gallimard, Pl\u00e9iade), Editor-in-chief of the\u00a0\u00a0<i>Camus <\/i>series (1986-2010) published\u00a0 by Lettres Modernes\u00a0 (Paris), General Editor (1989-2000) of the \u00abArs Interpretandi\u00bb series published by P. Lang (Munich\/NewYork), and Assistant Editor oft the\u00a0<i>French Review\u00a0<\/i>(1989-2010). He has been a member of the Executive Committee (1971-73,1974-81),\u00a0 Vice President, and\u00a0 President of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (1993-94), and\u00a0 President of the Howe Society (University of Florida, 1994-96). He is also a co-founder (with Brian T. Fitch and Jacqueline L\u00e9vi-Valensi at the 1982 Camus D\u00e9cade de Cerisy-la-Salle) and Past Vice President of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0 des \u00c9tudes\u00a0 Camusiennes \/ Camus\u00a0 Studies Association, a worldwide scholarly\u00a0 association. Beyond his work as convener, panelist and chair of sessions held at various national and international professional meetings (SAMLA, MLA, numerous\u00a0 special topics conferences abroad), he has been the principal organizer of three\u00a0 international symposia on Albert Camus, two having been held on the campus of\u00a0 the University of Florida (1970, 1980), one\u00a0 in Cerisy-la-Salle, France (1982). The proceedings of these conferences have been published\u00a0 by CELEF, Sherbrooke (Canada), the University Presses of Florida, and Gallimard (Paris) respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Research Orientation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General research focus: 20th-century French literature, critical theory, irony. Specific most recent research activities are three-fold: a) contributor coordinating and editing the technical apparatus for vols. I and II (published in April 2006); editor-in-chief and contributor of vols. III and IV (published in November 2008) of\u00a0 the new\u00a0 four-volume Pl\u00e9iade edition of the complete works of Albert Camus<i>; <\/i>currently he continues to coordinate the annual corrections for the periodic reprints of the <em>\u0152uvres compl\u00e8tes<\/em>\u00a0<i>(Paris, Gallimard, Pl\u00e9iade series), <\/i>b) an ongoing series of various commissioned articles, keynote presentations and book reviews; on the internet, he also maintained and regularly updated, until Winter 2012,\u00a0 a major scrollable research bibliography\u00a0 on Albert Camus (1990-2012). It has migrated to Boise State University under\u00a0<strong>http:\/\/camusbibliography.boisestate.edu\/<\/strong>. Beyond many chapters in books and conference proceedings, his latest major publication is, by invitation, a widely reviewed co-edited special volume under the title\u00a0<i>L\u2019Herne Camus<\/i>\u00a0(Paris, 2013). Most recently, he completed the organization and the analytical catalog of the vast collection of Camusiana (unpublished correspondences, typescripts, manuscripts, first editions, etc.), now permanently featured by the University of Florida&#8217;s Special Collections (<strong>http:\/\/www.uflib.ufl.edu\/spec\/camus\/<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Summary of Publications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is the sole author\u00a0 of\u00a0 five books (four on Albert Camus, one on the Proven\u00e7al\u00a0 Troubadours) and contributing editor of 16 volumes (mostly on Camus; published by Lettres Modernes, University of Florida Press, Gallimard). His latest sole-authored books are:\u00a0<i>ALBERT CAMUS.\u00a0 PARADIGMES DE L\u2019IRONIE: R\u00c9VOLTE ET N\u00c9GATION AFFIRMATIVE <\/i>(Toronto, Editions Paratexte, 2001) and\u00a0<i>THE STRANGER<\/i>\u00a0, an extended\u00a0<i>Forschungsbericht<\/i>\u00a0which appeared in October of 2001 (Gale Research series of \u201cLiterary Masterpieces\u201dno.8). Volume 22 of the long-standing Camus series, of which he was editor-in-chief for 20 years, has been published in 2010. Its main theme is \u201cCamus et l\u2019Histoire\u201d. It features two main sections, one on the proceedings of an international conference on this topic held in February 2008 on the campus of the University of Florida, one on a series of general articles on the same subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volumes I and II of the new Pl\u00e9iade edition of Camus\u2019s\u00a0<i>\u0152uvres compl\u00e8tes\u00a0<\/i>were published respectively in April 2006, volumes III and IV in November 2008 (Paris, Gallimard). This authoritative edition of Camus\u2019s complete works contains an extensive critical apparatus and features\u00a0the collective work of 14 internationally recognized\u00a0specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of\u00a0 the some 130 articles in professional journals and chapters\u00a0 in books that\u00a0 are published, approximately 70 deal with Albert Camus. They appeared in, among\u00a0 others,\u00a0<i>French\u00a0 Review<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Symposium<\/i>,<i>\u00a0Zeitschrift f\u00fcr\u00a0 franz\u00f6sische\u00a0 Sprache und Literatur<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Revue des Lettres Modernes<\/i>,<i>\u00a0Australian\u00a0 Journal of French Studies, Europe, Orbis Litterarum<\/i>, etc. The other articles deal\u00a0 with\u00a0 theory of irony, Louis-S\u00e9bastien Mercier, St\u00e9phane\u00a0 Mallarm\u00e9, Andr\u00e9 Gide, Jean-Paul Sartre, Michel Butor, Alain Robbe-Grillet, and, especially, Claude Simon.They can be found in\u00a0<i>Culture, \u00c9tudes Litt\u00e9raires,\u00a0 Texte\/Revue deTh\u00e9orie et de Critique Litt\u00e9raire, Romance Notes,<\/i>\u00a0<i>Revue d\u2019Histoire Litt\u00e9raire\u00a0 de la France, \u00c9tudes camusiennes<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Revue des Sciences humaines,\u00a0<\/i>etc. Several essays\u00a0 in English on professional\u00a0 issues were published\u00a0in specialized journals or books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Awards and Honors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recipient of various research and travel grants, a Professional Excellence Award (U. of Florida, 1996), member of the Chinard Prize Jury (Institut Fran\u00e7ais de Washington, 1981-1990) and the MLA William Riley Parker Prize Jury (1984-87), Chevalier (1987) and Officier (1993) des Palmes Acad\u00e9miques (French Government), Honorary Phi Kappa Phi member (1986-), President of the Howe Society (U.of Florida,1994-96), President of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (1993-94). For the academic year 2000-2001, he was awarded the Delton F.Scudder\u00a0 Term Professorship. As of May 2003, he is Professor Emeritus.
