You are required to do all of the problems below. You will not be required to hand them all in;
- A: Rosenlicht pp. 12-13/ 5a,6,7. Of these, hand in only 7b,c,e,f.
- B: Click here for non-book problems. Of these, hand in only B1(b), B2, B5, and B7.
For B2, I’m not requiring formal proofs of your answers, but do at least draw a picture or
pictures in R2 to indicate why the answers are what you say they are. - C: Read the handouts “Sets and Functions” and “Difference Between Inverse Functions
and Inverse Images” posted on the Miscellaneous Handouts page. You should be able to
do this quickly, since we’ve covered most of this in class. If you are not familiar with
equivalence relations, you should also read the handout “Equivalence Relations”.
I will announce later which ones you do have to hand in. Don’t make the mistake of thinking
that I’m collecting only the problems I think are important.
The “due date” above is the date that your written-up problems should be handed in, but don’t
wait to get started on the assignment. You should always get started on problems as soon as we
cover the relevant material in class.
