MAA 4211 Assignment 6

Due date: Wednesday, 11/6/13

Last update made by D. Groisser Fri Nov 1 18:44:02 EDT 2013

You are required to do all of the problems below. You
will not be required to hand them all in. I’ve indicated
which ones you do have to hand in.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that I’m collecting only the
problems I think are important.

The “due date” above is the date that your written-up problems
should be handed in, but don’t wait to get started on the assignment.
You should always get started on problems as soon as we cover the
relevant material in class.

  • A: Rosenlicht pp. 61–63/ 24, 26 (prove your answer), 28, 32. Of
these, hand in only 26, 28, and 32
. Note that #24 is, more or less,
a converse of something we proved in class, the last Proposition on p. 52.
(It is not exactly the converse because the ambient metric space is
assumed complete in the proposition on p. 52, but not in problem 24.)

  • B: Click here for non-book problems. Of these, hand in only B1cd, B2bc, and B3.
In your write-ups, you may assume the results of B1b and B2a.
