Martin Heesacker is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Florida (UF). He earned his Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of Missouri, is a licensed psychologist, and is board certified in counseling psychology. He served as president of the Society of Counseling Psychology, president of the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs, chair of the Association of Heads of Departments of Psychology, treasurer of the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology, executive board member of the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Commission on Accreditation, chair of UF’s Department of Psychology, three time director of UF’s accredited doctoral training program in counseling psychology, chair of the Promotion and Tenure Committee for UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and on the board of PSYCAS (APA’s universal application initiative for graduate training). Dr. Heesacker served as a faculty member in the psychology departments of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and The Ohio State University, as well as on the editorial boards of the two major journals in counseling psychology. Dr. Heesacker has authored or co-authored 140 scholarly publications, 180 scholarly conference presentations (over 40 of which were invited), and has supervised or co-supervised 42 doctoral dissertations, 24 master’s theses, and 44 undergraduate honors theses. Dr. Heesacker’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, the Veterans Administration, and the Florida Blue Foundation. His work has been cited over 7,000 times in other scholarly publications. Dr. Heesacker received the Early Career Award in Counseling Psychology from the APA and a J. William Fulbright Scholarship to the Netherlands. He was elected to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society and to the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. He has been named a fellow in the Association for Psychological Science, and in APA’s Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology, and Men and Masculinities Divisions. Dr. Heesacker received the Davis Productivity Award from Florida TaxWatch, an Eli Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellowship, and the Advocate for Boys Award from APA’s Men and Masculinities Division. He received two UF Teaching Awards, and three Teacher of the Year awards from Psi Chi, UF’s psychology honor society, as well as Psi Chi’s Outstanding Service Award. He has received both the Distinguished Faculty Award and the Distinguished Mentor of Undergraduate Research Award from the University of Florida’s Blue Key Society, as well as a teaching award from UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 2024 he received the Lifetime Contribution Award from the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs.
