Course 1 (Spring 2018) MAP6357 Partial Differential Equations 2 \/Section 2410<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Time and Location<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

M W F3 (9:35-10:25am), Little 223<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Office Hour: MHF 12:45-2pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description and Goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Credits: 3;\u00a0 Real Analysis and PDE-1 for graduate students<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This course is a continuation of the PDE-1 course based on L. C. Evans’ book Partial Differential Equations. The topics to be covered in this<\/p>\n\n\n\n

course are: Chapter 6: Second order Elliptic Equations, Chapter 7: Linear Evolution Equations, Chapter 8: The Calculus of Variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Textbook:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Partial Differential Equations, L.C.Evans, Graduate Studies in Mathematics, Vol.19, AMS<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homework<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Homework will be assigned after each lecture. I will collect the homework from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 6: Second order Elliptic Equations,<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Chapter 7: Linear Evolution Equations<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Chapter 8: The Calculus of Variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

If time permits I will add more discussion of fully\u00a0 nonlinear elliptic equations starting from really simple examples. The main purpose of this part is to present some of Luis Caffarelli and Shing-tung Yau’s ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Grades<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exam one (mid-term) February 21 (25%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Exam two (mid-term)\u00a0 March 28 (25%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Homework –15%<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Final exam : May 3, (Thursday) 12:30pm-2:30pm. (35%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grading Scale<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A: 85+ or above; B+: 75-84; B: 70-74; C+: 65-69; C: 60-64; D: 50-59; E: 0-49.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
