{"id":14,"date":"2012-09-05T11:20:59","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T15:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/template\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:18:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:18:31","slug":"course-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/lnewman\/courses\/course-2\/","title":{"rendered":"History Practicum:  1968"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<section class=\"fullwidth-text-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container px-0 pt-5\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-start\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History Practicum:  1968<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time and Location<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Last\u00a0taught Fall\u00a02014<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Not offered in the upcoming academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPracticum\u201d means doing practical work, and the history department\u2019s practicum is a required course designed to introduce students to the basic practices of historical investigation and to help students develop fundamental skills in critical reading, analytical thinking, historical research, and argumentative writing, all of which are needed to succeed in the major. \u00a0 These skills include being able to find and interpret various kinds of evidence; read and understand scholarly arguments about historical events; compose lucid analyzes of historical problems; effectively communicate ideas about history, both orally and in writing; and provide constructive feedback on others\u2019 work. Such skills will serve students well in their future endeavors, no matter what profession\/occupation they pursue after graduation. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"s1\">To gain insight into how historical knowledge is created, this course focuses on events from 1968, including student protests, the Vietnam War, Women\u2019s liberation, and the Civil Rights movement. The course explores how historians think about social change: how do historians analyze the origins and impact of social movements?
