Information for Students<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Society and the Individual (SYP 3000) Students: Midterm Study Guide (October, 2009)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Your midterm exam on October 15th will cover all of the reading materials for the first 8 reading weeks of the semester as indicated by the syllabus (including “The Social Construction of Subjective Experience”). The lecture notes are particularly important, but you will need to study the assigned readings as well because I will include a question or two from most of the readings.\u00a0 Make sure you understand the three theoretical perspectives we studied in this class (symbolic interactionism, social exchange, and the IRC model).\u00a0 PLEASE learn the three perspectives!\u00a0 You will do VERY\u00a0 POORLY on this exam if you do not understand them.\u00a0 You should know the various features of each perspective and be able to distinguish the persperctives from one another.\u00a0 You also should be able to apply them, or see how they could be relevant to different types of situations.\u00a0At least<\/strong>\u00a010 questions will focus on these perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The exam will include 50 multiple choice questions worth either 7 or 10 points apiece depending on whether you decide to write the term paper.\u00a0 Bring a #2 pencil. You will have the entire class period to take the exam.\u00a0\u00a0Please be on time<\/strong>\u00a0so that everyone hears the same directions and students are not disrupted by others coming in late.\u00a0 Only under very, very rare circumstances do I give make-up exams and any student who approaches me about this option will need to do so\u00a0BEFORE March 3rd<\/strong>. Such a student will forfeit having any potential curve applied to his\/her final score, irrespective of their reason for requesting a makeup exam.\u00a0 A curve might be applied to those students who take the exam during the regular class time.\u00a0 (see syllabus for exam policies)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The computerized program I use is supported by the university and requires that I have 5 answer categories.\u00a0 Because I’m a nice guy, I will only ask you to choose from 4 possible answers.\u00a0 Thus, for each question there will be one answer that reads “xxxxx.”\u00a0 You should (you must) ignore this answer category.\u00a0 If you choose it you will automatically get it wrong!\u00a0 I will test the depth of your understanding by including some questions which have legitimate answer categories “all of the answers are correct” or “none of the answers are correct.”\u00a0 You should not be afraid to choose this answer if you feel confident it is the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Also, in the fall 2008 the Department was migrated to a new computer system and that system sometimes does not process the computer program for creating testing as efficiently as the old system.\u00a0 There may be some odd symbols interspersed throughout the exam because the computer program does not always read accurately symbols like question marks, dashes, or apostrophes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The questions will vary in difficulty.\u00a0 Some will require you to process information dealing with different theories or concepts and demonstrate your understanding of the material.\u00a0 For example:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. As discussed in class, a major criticism of the social exchange model of human behavior is that:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    \u00a0(1) it inappropriately assumes that human behavior can sometimes have an important rational component
    \n(2) it tends to overemphasize the idea that individuals are confronted with various alternatives
    \n(3) it does not give enough attention to individuals’ ability to search for and find alternative ways of behaving
    \n(4) the emotional dimensions to social life are not treated adequately
    \n(5) xxxxx<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Other questions will be relatively straight forward and will simply determine whether you can recall the definition of a key concept.\u00a0 For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. According to the IRC model, a person’s knowledge about the stock market represents:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      \u00a0(1) an aspect of the norm of reciprocity
      \n(2) personalized cultural capital
      \n(3) none of the answers are correct
      \n(4) a form of univocal reciprocity
      \n(5) xxxxx<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Reification:
        \n(1) is a strategy for bridging the gap between social structure and social process
        \n(2) refers to the notion that sometimes people treat abstract ideas as being concrete
        \n(3) all of the answers are correct

        \n(5) can be accounted for most accurately by using the social exchange perspective<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        In some instances I will provide you with a brief scenario to encourage you to think about social psychological processes and concepts.\u00a0 As part of the scenario I will ask you a question to determine if you have a clear and deep understanding of the concept.\u00a0 An example might be:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Assume the year is 2015 and you run into one of your close friends and classmates from this course (Society and the Individual) at an amusement park. Your former classmate is accompanied by her husband (Dareous) and child and you start to talk about childrearing.\u00a0 In the course of your conversation you jokingly ask your former classmate if her child has blurted out any bad words yet like like Marsiglio did with his mom.\u00a0 Both you and your former classmate start to laugh.\u00a0 Dareous is quite puzzled by your hysterical laughter because he is ignorant of the fact that you\u00a0 and your former classmate share:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          \u00a0(1) personalized cultural capital
          \n(2) generalized cultural capital
          \n(3) similar reputations
          \n(4) emotional energy
          \n(5) xxxxx<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

          \u00a0If I (Dr. Marsiglio)\u00a0 were taking this exam I would do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Read and highlight all of the material by the end of the weekend!
            \n2. Have complete, well-organized, and legible notes.
            \n3. Develop athorough understanding of the theoretical perspectives<\/b>covered in the course.\u00a0 Think about their key assumptions and criticisms.\u00a0 Compare and contrast them to each other.
            \n4. Study the key concepts and force myself to come up with my\u00a0own examples\u00a0<\/b>to illustrate them.
            \n5. Perhaps study with someone to force myself to talk about these concepts aloud.
            \n6. Study Cahill\u2019s initial comments about each of the articles included in Inside Social Life.
            \n7. Read Hewitt’s work in a way that I retain a\u00a0solid understanding of the concepts central to the SI perspective.<\/b>
            \n8. Review Tuesdays with Morrie and be prepared to interpret Mitch and Morrie\u2019s story using concepts we\u2019ve discussed in class.
            \n9. Spend a lot of time studying my notes!
            \n10.\u00a0 Go over the discussion questions thoroughly.
            \n11. Visualize how good I will feel if I do well on the exam!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            I just submitted your final grades to the registrar this afternoon.\u00a0 I curved the final exam 2 questions or 8 points out of 200.\u00a0 The top raw score was 49\/50.\u00a0 Each question was worth 4 points, so that person ended up receiving 204\/200 (congrats!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

            Study Guide for Men and Masculinities (Summer), EXAM is during the class period June 2, 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

            Your midterm exam will cover all of the reading materials for the first 3 READING\u00a0 weeks of the semester as indicated by the syllabus.\u00a0\u00a0 The lecture notes are particularly important, but you will need to study the assigned readings as well. \u00a0 I will ask questions about reading material that we did not cover in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

            \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The exam will include 50 multiple choice questions worth 5 points apiece.\u00a0 Remember that the exam is worth 250 out of the 1,000 points for the course.\u00a0 You will have the entire class period to complete the exam.\u00a0\u00a0Please be on time<\/strong>\u00a0(5-10 minutes early ideally) so that everyone hears the same directions and students are not disrupted by others coming in late.\u00a0 If you arrive late, you will still have to finish the exam by the end of the period 12:15.\u00a0 Only under very, very rare circumstances do I give make-up exams and any student who approaches me about this option will need to do so\u00a0BEFORE June 2.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Such a student will\u00a0FORFEIT<\/strong>\u00a0having any potential curve applied to his\/her final score that might be applied to those students who take the exam during the regular class time.\u00a0 (see syllabus for exam policies)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

            \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The computerized program I use is supported by the university and requires that I have 5 answer categories.\u00a0 Because I’m a nice guy, I will only ask you to choose from 4 possible answers. Thus, for each question there will be one answer that reads “XXXXX”\u00a0 You should (you must) ignore this answer category.\u00a0 If you choose it, you will automatically get it wrong!\u00a0 I will test the depth of your understanding by including some questions which have legitimate answer categories “all of the specific answers are correct” or “none of the specific answers are correct.”\u00a0 You should not be afraid to choose this answer if you feel confident it is the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

                Here are the midterm scores, internet project, and attendance scores to date.\u00a0 I applied a rather substantial curve to the midterm exam: 6 questions (30 points).\u00a0 The top score prior to the curve was 47 questions correct out of 50.\u00a0 With the curve, multipled by the 5 points per\u00a0 question weighting, that person received 265\/250 (congrats!).

                    \n2. Have complete, well-organized, and legible notes.
                    \n3. Develop a thorough understanding of the theoretical perspectives covered in the course.\u00a0 Think about their key assumptions.
                    \n4. Study the key concepts and force myself to come up with my own examples to illustrate them.
                    \n5. Perhaps study with someone to force myself to talk about these concepts aloud.
                    \n6. Review Tuesdays with Morrie and be prepared to interpret Mitch and Morrie\u2019s story using concepts we\u2019ve discussed in class.
                    \n7. Spend a lot of time studying my notes!
