Homework & Quizzes
Written homework will be collected in discussion class randomly throughout the semester, up to a total of 5 assignments. Each assignment is worth 3 points. The homework which is liable to be collected for a given class is listed on the course calendar below and in the syllabus. Photocopied or scanned copies of homework are not acceptable. Never bring homework to the front desk of the Math Department.
Aug. 23: No quiz of HW | Aug. 30: 1-3 | Sept. 6: 4-5 No Quiz | Sept. 13: 6-8 |
Sept. 20: 9-11 | Sept. 27: 12-13 No quiz | Oct. 4: 14-16 | Oct. 11: 17-19 |
Oct. 18: 20-21 | Oct. 25: 22-23 No quiz | Nov. 1: 24-26 | Nov. 8: 27-29 |
Nov. 15: 30-31 | Nov. 22: No Class | Nov. 29: 32-33 | Dec. 6: 34-36 No quiz |
There will be a quiz every class, save for the few exceptions listed on the calendar. Each quiz will be worth 6 points. A quiz will only cover material from the lectures listed for that day. The best way to prepare for the quiz is to do the written homework, as I look to those problems for inspiration. You are required to use your own paper for the quiz.
Every sheet of paper you turn in to me must have your section number and name in the upper right hand corner.
Exams
Check canvas for exam locations. These will vary from one exam to the next. Also, note that the final may be at a different time than the rest of the exams.
Exam 1: Sept. 21, 8:30-10pm | Exam 2: Oct. 19, 8:30-10pm |
Exam 3: Nov. 17, 8:30-10pm | Final: Dec. 10: 12:30-2:30pm |
HW and Quiz Drops and Exam Replacement
Your best 8 out of 10 quizzes and 4 out of 5 homework assignments will be used to calculating your grade. If your final exam score is higher than your lowest semester exam score, then it will replace that grade. This can make a big difference in your grade but remember that the final will be harder than any of the semester exams because it will cover more material.
Online Poll
The primary purpose of our discussion class is to give you a chance to ask me questions and have them answered. Because our time is limited (only 35 minutes) it’s important to ensure that it’s as fairly distributed as possible. That’s why I’ve created an online poll that you’ll be expected to complete before each week’s discussion class. The poll can be accessed by the following link:
https://goo.gl/forms/cuFLXNN4tjEi3Ph52
In it you’ll provide your name, section number, and a list of problems that you’d like worked out in the next discussion class. I’ll look at the results of the poll to determine which problems to present in class.
There will be 14 ballots in total and points will be awarded based on the following table. Votes must be cast before 5pm on the day before our class in order to receive credit and be considered for presentation.
Attendance and Late Policy
The work you do for your discussion section will be an important part of your grade, so attendance is mandatory. If you’re more than 10 minutes late to class then you will not be able to turn in homework or take the quiz.
Make-up Policy
In order to be eligible to take a make-up exam or quiz or to to turn in late homework at least one of the following conditions must be met:
- You will be absent due to a religious observance and you notify the course coordinator of this absence within three weeks of the beginning of the semester.
- You will be absent due to participation in a University sponsored event and you notify the course coordinator at least one week prior to the absence.
- You are absent from at least three discussion classes for a valid documented reason.
- You are absent due to a court ordered obligation.
All make-ups must be approved by the course coordinator. If you forget your homework talk with me after class.
Extended Drop-Back Period
Students taking MAC 2311 are able to replace this course with MAC 1147 for up to one week after the end of the add/drop period. Before the end of add/drop you can make changes to your schedule as usual through ISIS, but after that date if you decide you’d like to drop-back to MAC 1147, you can do so by talking to someone at the front desk of the Math Department. The deadline for this is 4pm September 6.
