Biography

Dr. Olivia Adams (she/her) is an interdisciplinary social scientist and educator. She received her Ph.D. in Gender Studies from Indiana University Bloomington, where she also contributed to research at the Kinsey Institute.  Today, her work investigates patient experiences of chronic vulvovaginal pain, with special attention to the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in the journey to diagnosis. As an interdisciplinary scholar, Dr. Adams draws from psychology, history, nursing, public health, and gender studies in her work. She is especially interested in how both present-day and historical biases in medical systems and medical education contribute to diagnostic delay and other negative healthcare experiences for people seeking treatment for chronic vulvovaginal pain and related medical concerns. To date, her work has been funded by the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.
