\n“what are you trying to do [in your poems]?”
\namong my collection of things poetic is a collation of dozens of statements from different lands and centuries about what poets\/poems are (or not) arranged in the form of spokes around an empty hub. what i’m “trying to do” is slide my fingers down some of those spokes — poetry is that which is untranslatable, the poet is a pretender, a designer of language — to get a temporary shine. to discover peculiarities of the tongue, strange cousins, words echoing each other’s materiality and possible significance. to respond to, extrapolate on, and de-center a centrifugal image, usually the beginning, the provocations of certain such “epiphanies.” to follow up on these acoustic, visual or even conceptual foundations, which may reveal something about the arbitrary nature of language, perception, attempts at irrational knowledge, the dialectic of meaning\/non-meaning. if not to build imaginary blocks, to create create atmospheres (moods?) of words, shapes of syntax tones and rhythms, in which hypothetical selves may temper false realities. in (ergo) sum, to exorcise macro-demons of perplexity by creating micro-demons of patterns and motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\nopiniated confirmations of viewing areas
\nlabelhoods frontal expediencies and sin-
\ndependent rank and role ratings.
\nMoving and still temptations of phone-
\nin or disaspectful cacaphony
\ncronipherous satellite links
\npreposturized cable and calk.
\nBalk! Caucus contre wiretrapped in-
\naccuracies in eptitudes in-tapped
\nand rave prensile agilities.
\nUltimate wards of the spate
\nstave offly statements of loqualacious
\nregionable actuality and nation all impact
\nwords of the art fee acts full agendae and artifacts
\nlaurels of the great tomes of factual medium glisten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

A Report of I-Thou Rapport
\n1. a nameless mirth first cracked
\nthe untold secrets of waiting
\nthrough the first-born crop;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

2. in this “sometimes sentimental education”
\nthere were staying pains to grasp and file
\nthe rawness, even years,
\nprey of staid and deafly friendships
\nwithout sails, odd years,
\nspawning polish for feet
\nrather than hands or minds,
\nas tildes make the words of spanish shine;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

3. to search the speaking of the heart and how we sew it,
\nsilence followed, and s\/he said of the fleet:
\ntheir new erotic poetry is neurotic poetry
\ntheir lyric “I” is a lyric “my”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

4. confessions conferred lesions in the mesh,
\na festive festering of confusion and deferred sins;
\nif allegiance was suspect, it was concluded there
\nmust be a clamoring for continuation,
\na search and destruction where
\nthe padres convert infidels and revert
\na catechism of folly, an account of true schism;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

5. the phonology of pace
\nthe ex-motive of experience
\nthe temper of time and space
\nand the persistent question
\nwhat have you done for them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

6. and finally overcoming that burden of inquiry
\nand naming the unfolding birth as it may seal
\nphase, peer, seek, sphere, split, tempt, fail or feel
\nlike a telling and unswerving service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Far be it from me to presume to pontificate
\nabout the beyond, the other side of thisness,

So forgo me pondering arcs and suspensions to make
\namends, a more modern montage of shreds and planks,
\nor build, construct, a covered goal or yonder link,
\nor large the brink to strike or set a toll,<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

simply to charge a new and un-
\nexpected pontage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Staybreak<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

then the certain regular fluke taking by surprise
\nthe reversals that sever relaxed ties;
\nfigures of driving lack, daily presence
\nwithout cuffing or restraining, strapped to
\nthis person a being-bent-deeply-over himself:
\nthe precarious fashions and fictions of meshing
\n(with others, Others and remnants of the living);
\nthe fleshing rituals of imitation and imprecation
\n(passing over fads or fifteen-minute fame);
\nthe guessing, threshing and trashing of tasks and
\nthis absolukewarm bath prior to the next
\nmaterial and ethereal doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

\ncease to be sorry for the selling of ease,
