  • Instructor: Sergei S. Pilyugin
  • Announcements: All important announcements will be posted here and in canvas.
Please, follow all the University guidelines regarding the Covid-19 situation.
  • Homeworks: Homework problems will be assigned/announced during lectures.
  • Prerequisites: (MAC 2313 or MAC 3474) and MAP 2302 with minimum grades of C. Credit will be given for, at most, MAA 4402 or MAA 5404.
  • Lecture format:: The official course meeting time is MTWRF 4 (12:30 to 1:45 pm). The lectures will be delivered as synchronous video conferences via zoom (Meeting ID: 96739889925, Passcode: see in canvas). Every day, the zoom conference will commence at 12:00pm and end at 1:45pm. The lecture part of the conference (12:30 to 1:45pm) shall be recorded in the cloud, so you will have access to the previously recorded lectures. The 30 minute time slot before the lecture (not recorded) will be dedicated to office hours. Please, sign in to zoom session in a timely fashion. In addition to zoom recordings, PDF copies of lecture notes will be made available in canvas.
  • Final Exam: The final exam will be held in canvas on the last day of classes.
  • Text: Complex Variables and Applications, 9th edition, by Brown and Churchill. Students are highly recommended to purchase the book, but older editions will probably suffice.
  • Course content: Complex numbers, analytic functions, the Cauchy–Riemann equations, harmonic functions, elementary functions, path integrals, the Cauchy–Goursat theorem, the Cauchy integral formula, infinite series, residues, poles, contour integration and conformal mapping.
  • Critical dates: 05/10 – classes begin, 06/18 – classes end. Quizzes: 05/13, 05/19, 05/27, 06/02, 06/10. Midterms: 05/21, 06/04. Final exam: 06/18. All tests will be held in canvas during respective class period. Holidays (no class): 05/31 – Memorial Day.
  • Office Hours: The beginning time slot (12:00 to 12:30pm) of the everyday zoom conference will be dedicated to Q&A on the course content. For all personal communications, please use e-mail: pilyugin@ufl.edu or canvas messaging.
  • Grading System: All tests/quizzes will be held in canvas. The tests/quizzes for MAA 5404 will differ from those for MAA 4402. For each test/quiz I will create the corresponding assignment with the attached pdf file containing the test problems. Please, complete the problems on paper (or otherwise), scan all pages into a single pdf file, and submit you solutions with this pdf file in attachment.
The course grade will be determined by 2 midterms (15% each); 5 quizzes (10% each, the lowest score is dropped) based on homework assignments, and the cumulative final exam (30%). The resulting score determines the letter grade according to the following table

    Letter Grade
    A
    A-
    B+
    B
    B-
    C+
    C
    C−
    D+
    D
    Score ≥ 92 ≥ 89 ≥ 85 ≥ 81 ≥ 77 ≥ 72 ≥ 67 ≥ 62 ≥ 56 ≥ 50
  • Expectations:: Any work submitted for a grade in this course will be graded in a rigorous fashion, therefore it should have a great deal of thought and care put into it. Work which is sloppy or messy or that which is not written in a clear and coherent fashion will be marked down. This includes losing points for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and similar offenses.
  • Course policies:
  • University’s honesty policy: UF students are bound by The Honor Pledge which states, “We, the members of the University of Florida community, pledge to hold ourselves and our peers to the highest standards of honor and integrity by abiding by the Honor Code”.
