Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sharon Wright Austin is Professor of Political Science at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on African-American women\u2019s political behavior, African-American mayoral elections, rural African-American political activism, and African-American political behavior. She is the author of\u00a0Race, Power, and Political Emergence in Memphis<\/em>\u00a0(Garland 2000);\u00a0The Transformation of Plantation Politics in the Mississippi Delta: Black Politics, Concentrated Poverty, and Social Capital in the Mississippi Delta<\/em>\u00a0(State University of New York Press 2006); and\u00a0The Caribbeanization of Black Politics: Race, Group Consciousness, and Political Participation in America<\/em>\u00a0(State University of New York Press 2018). She has also published articles in the\u00a0National Political Science Review, Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, the Journal of Black Studies,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Politics and Policy<\/em>, as well as several book chapters. She currently has two forthcoming books,\u00a0Political Black Girl Magic: The Elections and Governance of Black Female Mayors<\/em> (In Production, Temple University Press) and\u00a0Beyond Racial Capitalism: Cooperatives in the African Diaspora<\/em> (In Production, Oxford University Press and co-edited with Caroline Shenaz Hossein and Kevin Edmonds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Areas of Interest\/Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Austin has teaching interests in minority politics, American government, public law, and public policy.\u00a0 She conducts research in the areas of African American politics, gender and politics, Southern politics, and urban politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
