{"id":211,"date":"2021-10-09T19:41:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T23:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/?page_id=211"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:06:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:06:26","slug":"women-of-color-and-the-law-online-course","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/women-of-color-and-the-law-online-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Women of Color and the Law Online Course"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<section class=\"fullwidth-text-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container px-0 pt-5\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-start\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Description:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This asynchronous course will examine the experiences of women in the legal profession and the courts with an emphasis on racial and ethnic minority women.\u00a0 In this course, we will examine the impact of race and ethnicity on the legal status and outcomes of minority women.\u00a0 We will primarily examine the experiences of African American women, but will also study issues that affect Latinas, Asian American women, immigrant women of color, and Native American women. The modules will address the following topics: 1) criminal justice and incarceration; 2) educational discrimination; 3) employment discrimination; 4) immigration issues; 5) language discrimination; 6) reproductive rights and domestic violence; 7) understanding the law school process and entering the profession; and 8) the trafficking and exploitation of women of color.\u00a0 The instructor will post eight 10-15 minute lectures and students will watch documentaries, participate in discussion posts, and complete required readings.\u00a0 This course meets requirements for the African American Studies and Political Science majors, the Asian American Studies minor, and as an outside course for Women\u2019s Studies majors and minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Objectives:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learn the correct method for briefing cases.<\/li>\n<li>Analyze racial and ethnic issues raised in law review and other scholarly articles.<\/li>\n<li>Examine theories that assess the experience of women of color such as critical race theory, feminist theories, implicit bias theories, the theory of intersectionality, and womanist theories.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the challenges that women of color experience in the legal arena as professors, attorneys, plaintiffs, and defendants.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required Textbooks:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cynthia Bowman, et al. <em>Feminist Jurisprudence, Cases and Materials.
