{"id":274,"date":"2022-12-13T14:42:26","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T19:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/?page_id=274"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:06:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:06:26","slug":"black-horror-and-social-justice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/black-horror-and-social-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Horror and Social Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<section class=\"fullwidth-text-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container px-0 pt-5\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-start\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black Horror and Social Justice<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror documentary, Author, Filmmaker and Professor Tananarive Due says, \u201cBlack history is Black horror.\u201d This asynchronous Quest 2 course examines the way in which filmmakers and scholar activists have advocated for social justice in horror movies.\u00a0 Quest 2 courses ask \u201cwhat we can do\u201d to address societal issues. Educators and filmmakers have created popular films over the years to discuss societal issues. In particular, they have described the racism that was occurring in America during various time periods in horror movies. In this class, students will examine real-world issues that cut across disciplines. We will examine questions such as the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Did the Blaxploitation era of filmmaking end because of institutional racism or a lack of profits?<\/li>\n<li>How have filmmakers and educators used the horror genre of filmmaking to protest racism and promote social justice ideals?<\/li>\n<li>Is what ways are Black Americans continuing to experience \u201cBlack Horror\u201d and how are they responding to it?<\/li>\n<li>How have these films affected the way in which you understand social justice issues?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, students will examine the ways that data, methods, and tools from diverse fields have been used to address pressing questions facing human societies today.\u00a0 We will examine qualitative scholarly articles, historiographies, oral histories, documentaries, and films.\u00a0 We focus on two questions: \u201cWhat are the unintended consequences of racism?\u201d and \u201cHow have individuals publicized racism and the fight for social justice in popular films?\u201d \u00a0In essence, these \u201cmovies\u201d are about more than entertainment, but have the goals of educating individuals about the issues African Americans confront in their lives and how they address them. \u00a0There are eight modules.\u00a0 Each includes two weeks of assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/content-removed\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-276\">Click here for Spring 2023 syllabus<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1262,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"featured_post":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-274","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/274","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1262"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=274"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/274\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":334,"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/274\/revisions\/334"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/polssdw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=274"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
