Course Content and Objectives

The first semester of a rigorous year long introduction to modern analysis. Topics include the real and complex number systems; metric spaces and basic topology including compact and connected sets; sequences and series; continuity; differentiation; and the Riemann integral. Mastery of the course content and learning to critically read, and construct and carefully write, rigorous proofs in analysis are goals of this course.

Text book

  • Text: Principles of Mathematical Analysis, Walter Rudin, McGraw-Hill 1976

Homework.

15 homework problems will be assigned and graded. The best 12 will count toward the course grade.

Grading

A course total will be based upon the homework assignments. Grades will then be assigned according to the scale:

    94 A
    90 A-
    87 B+
    83 B
    80 B-
    75 C+
    66 C
    58 D

Attendance

Attendance is recommended.
