Aim of Course

This course is the first part of a two semester sequence to prepare students for the First Year Algebra Exam. In this sequence the student will learn the basic concepts and results in algebra. Full mathematical rigor and abstraction are used throughout. The first semester focuses mainly on group theory, with material taken from chapters 1-6 of the text. In the second semester the main topics are rings and modules and fields, with material selected from chapters 7-13 of the text.

Grading

Grades will be based on graded homework assignments (40%), a midterm (25%) and a final exam (35%). Mathematical accuracy and clarity of exposition are the qualities which will earn high marks. 

Midterm: Friday October 25th (usual class time and room).

Final : Thursday December 12, 12.30-2.30 p.m. (usual room).
