Aim of Course
This course is the second part of a two semester sequence to prepare students for the First Year Algebra Exam. In this sequence the student will learn the basic concepts and results in algebra. Full mathematical rigor and abstraction are used throughout. The first semester focused mainly on group theory, with material taken from chapters 1-6 of the text. In the second semester the main topics are rings and modules and fields, with material selected from chapters 7-13 of the text.
Grading
Grades will be based on two midterms (25% each) and a final exam (50%). Mathematical accuracy and clarity of exposition are the qualities which will earn high marks. Most graduate students must maintain a GPA not less than 3.0 to satisfy the conditions of their funding.
Midterm Exam: 2/14/25 and 3/28/25 during normal class period.
Final Exam: 5/2/2025 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Lit 221
Suggested Problems
Below are some suggested exercises, grouped in a similar way to the graded assignments
of MAS5311 last Fall. However they are not graded.
I recommend doing far more than those in this list, but I provide this list so that
we have at least some problems in common for discussions.

Course Evaluations
Students are expected to provide professional and respectful feedback on the quality of instruction in this course by completing course evaluations online via GatorEvals. Guidance on how to give feedback in a professional and respectful manner is available at https://gatorevals.aa.ufl.edu/students/. Students will be notified when the evaluation period opens, and can complete evaluations through the email they receive from GatorEvals, in their Canvas course menu under GatorEvals, or via https://ufl.bluera.com/ufl/. Summaries of course evaluation results are available to students at
