Do not go to the scheduled classroom on the dates listed.<br \/>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Office Hours:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Sin: WF per. 9 Little 432.<br \/>\nMr Krogman: M per.3 Little 481.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description and Goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The course provides a rigorous and thorough introduction to\u00a0 linear algebra, a\u00a0 subject which is basic to nearly all branches of pure and applied mathematics, with many applications in science, engineering and economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The student will learn to read\u00a0 and write\u00a0 proofs of theorems, and\u00a0 develop computational skills. This course is designed to serve majors in mathematics and those engineering and science students interested in a\u00a0 conceptual understanding of the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Textbook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Linear Algebra, by Insel, Friedberg and Spence (4th ed.). You can also use the 5th ed., in which case see the changes noted in the homework section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Software<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>GNU octave is free, open source Matlab-like numerical linear algebra software that is easy to install and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Matlab is somewhat bigger, fancier, and not free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>SageMath is a free open-source mathematics software system,<br \/>\nusing a python-based language. (Check the course calendar for the dates.)<br \/>\nHomework is worth 20 in total. Your grade will be based on the total (out of 100) of your homework score and the<br \/>\nscores on these three exams. The dates of the class exams and final are given in the course calendar. No make-up exams will be given except for documented special reasons, such as medical emergencies. Exams can be rearranged for student athletes only if I am notified at least four weeks in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>If you think that a score has been <strong>computed incorrectly<\/strong>, please bring the matter to my attention within one day of your work being returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>If you think that your work has been <strong>graded incorrectly<\/strong>, please submit an appeal in writing within seven days of  your work being returned, explaining your reasons in detail. Appeals may result in a higher, unchanged, or lower score, depending on the merit of the appeal. Decisions on appeals are final.
