OF MATHEMATICS Robert Long Scholarship Committee<br>\nannounces the 2024 Annual <span class=\"attn\">Robert Long Essay Competition<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #cc1111\"><em>Purpose:<\/em><\/span> To encourage students to investigate the sources,<br>\nmotivations and the development of mathematical ideas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #cc1111\"><em>The Competition:\u00a0<\/em><\/span>A 10-20 page <em>expository<\/em> paper on<br>\n<span class=\"gentlekav\">Mathematics<\/span><br>\nand\/or<br>\n<span class=\"gentlekav\">History of Mathematics<\/span><br>\nand\/or<br>\n<span class=\"gentlekav\">Philosophy of Mathematics<\/span>. The topics may be chosen from any<br>\ntime period from ancient to modern. The subject of the paper may be pure, applied or both.<br>\nThe essay may also center on the discussion of mathematical ideas<br>\nevolving from (or contributing to) important advances in engineering,<br>\nstatistics, logic and foundations, or the physical and biological sciences.While <em>the focus of the paper should be on mathematical ideas,<\/em><br>\nit may also include a collateral presentation of individuals who made<br>\nmajor contributions. Attention should be paid to the quality<br>\nof the prose, organization of the narrative, and identification of<br>\nsource materials.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #cc1111\"><em>Eligibility:<\/em><\/span> <em>Undergraduate<\/em> or <em>graduate students<\/em><br>\nat UF, including <em>High School students<\/em> taking a course at UF.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #cc1111\"><em>The Prize:<\/em><\/span> One or two scholarships may be awarded.<br>\nThe total amount for these awards is typically <span style=\"color: brown\">$500<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #cc1111\"><em>Manuscript Due Date:<\/em><\/span><br>\nManuscripts in PDF form should be submitted via email<br>\nto: Prof. Jonathan King,<tt>squash@ufl.edu<\/tt><br>\nby <strong>11:59PM <\/strong> on<br>\n<span style=\"color: maroon;font-size: 130%\">Monday, March 25, 2024<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n<li>Please name the PDF file with \u201cRLPrize2024\u201d followed by your<br>\nname.
