He is co-founder of UF\u2019s Science Fiction Working Group, founder and Director of UF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/imagining-climate.clas.ufl.edu\">Imagining Climate Change<\/a> initiative, and Assistant Director for Humanities Research of UF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/astraeus.ufl.edu\">Astraeus Space Institute<\/a>. From 2013\u201316 he was the Department of English\u2019s Director of Graduate Student Teaching and General Education. Nominated five times for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Mentoring and Teaching Awards, he was a winner of the CLAS Teacher of the Year Award in 2008 and 2020, and CLAS\u2019s nominee for the University-wide Teacher of the Year Award in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He is the author of <em>Ex-foliations: Reading Machines and the Upgrade Path<\/em> (2008); and co-editor, with Daniel Comp\u00e8re and Volker Dehs, of <em>Collectionner l\u2019Extraordinaire, sonder l\u2019Ailleurs. Essais sur Jules Verne en hommage \u00e0 Jean-Michel Margot<\/em> (2015). Recent publications by Harpold have appeared in journals such as <em>\u00c9pist\u00e9mocritique<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Galaxies<\/em>, <em>Science Fiction Studies<\/em>, and <em>Verniana<\/em>; and in edited collections such as <em>Los viajes extraordinarios de Jules Verne<\/em> (2018), <em>The Cambridge History of Science Fiction<\/em> (2019),\u00a0<em>EcoComix: Essays on the Environment in Comics and Graphic Novels<\/em> (2020), <em>Jules Verne Lives! Essays on His Works and Legacy<\/em> (2023), and <em>An Existential Toolkit for Climate Justice Educators<\/em> (2024).<\/p>\n<p>He is a member of the editorial boards of <em>ImageTexT, Journal of Posthumanism<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Postmodern Culture<\/em>; a founding member of the Editorial Advisory Board of <em>Verniana: Jules Verne Studies \/ Etudes Jules Verne<\/em>; and a Trustee of the Board of Directors of the North American Jules Verne Society. In 2014, Harpold founded the International Association for the Fantastic in the Art\u2019s annual Walter James Miller Memorial Award for Student Scholarship in the International Fantastic, for which he is the Jury Chair.
