Research<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Attitudes about Childlessness and Family<\/strong><\/span>
\nDr. Koropeckyj-Cox\u00a0conducts research on attitudes about childlessness and their connection to contemporary fertility trends and work-family dilemmas.\u00a0She has published articles on attitudes about childlessness in the U.S., including the\u00a0gender gap in attitudes<\/a>\u00a0(Journal of Marriage and Family,\u00a0<\/i>2007). Similar comparisons among European and other countries are underway using data from the European\u00a0Values Surveys (with\u00a0Alin<\/span>\u00a0Ceobanu<\/span>, UF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

She is conducting a survey of college students’ attitudes about gender, childlessness, and family issues. A\u00a0recent article<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Journal of Family Issues<\/i>\u00a0compares perceptions of parents and childless\/childfree couples. Findings\u00a0on students’ attitudes about childless individuals and couples appeared in the journal\u00a0Sex Roles<\/i>\u00a0(2007).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

A parallel survey, conducted among Turkish university students by Dr. Zeynep Copur of\u00a0Hacettepe<\/span>\u00a0University, has allowed for cross-national comparisons of\u00a0perceptions<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0attitudes<\/a>\u00a0(Journal of Family Issues,\u00a0<\/i>2010;\u00a0Journal of Comparative Family Studies,\u00a0<\/i>2015, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

She has also\u00a0collaborated on a cross-cultural study of perceptions and attitudes among students in Florida, Turkey, and Japan (with Dr. Yoshimi Kataoka and Dr. Takashi\u00a0Fukino<\/span>\u00a0of Shimane University, Japan, and Dr. Zeynep Copur,\u00a0Hacettepe<\/span>\u00a0University, Turkey).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Implications of Childlessness over the Life Course
\n<\/strong><\/span>Dr. Koropeckyj-Cox has examined the implications of childlessness for\u00a0psychological well-being in middle and old age.\u00a0Using U.S. national data, she has compared depression and loneliness of childless adults and parents over 50 (Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences,<\/i>\u00a01998;\u00a0Journal of Family Issues<\/i>, 2009, with Dr. Regina Bures and Michael\u00a0Loree<\/span>). She has also examined how attitudes about childlessness and quality of parent-child relationships are linked to psychological well-being (Journal of Marriage and Family<\/i>, 2002) and\u00a0the implications of fertility timing for women’s well-being in late midlife (with Dr. Amy\u00a0Pienta<\/span>\u00a0and Dr. Tyson H. Brown in\u00a0International Journal of Aging and Human Development,\u00a0<\/i>2007).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Singlehood in Midlife and Older Adulthood
\n<\/strong><\/span>With funding from the Anthony Marchionne Foundation, Dr. Koropeckyj-Cox\u00a0 examined the demographic characteristics and psychological well-being of never-married and long-term single older adults.\u00a0 This study\u00a0with psychologist Dr. Susan\u00a0Bluck<\/span>\u00a0included in-depth interviews with older, single men and women in Florida.\u00a0 Drawing on this research, Dr. Koropeckyj-Cox contributed a commentary on the social stigma of singlehood, published in\u00a0Psychological Inquiry<\/i>\u00a0(July 2005).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Other Collaborative Projects<\/strong><\/span>
\nDr. Koropeckyj-Cox has published an article with Dr.\u00a0Alin<\/span>\u00a0Ceobanu<\/span>\u00a0on attitudes about immigration and population aging in Europe. Using\u00a0the\u00a0EuroBarometer<\/span>\u00a0surveys, they compared data from 27 countries to assess attitudes about “replacement migration” (Population Research and Policy Review, 2012<\/i>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

She has worked with Dr. Allen Glicksman (Philadelphia Corporation for Aging) on several projects related to aging in the American Jewish population (The Gerontologist<\/i>, 2009;\u00a0Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging,\u00a02017<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dr. Koropeckyj-Cox has also collaborated with Dr. Justin Coran (University Hospitals, Cleveland) and Dr. Christa Arnold (University of North Florida) on studies of\u00a0the extent of\u00a0agreement in\u00a0physician-patient dyads<\/a>\u00a0(Health Education and Behavior,\u00a0<\/i>2013) and communication skills and challenges among Florida physicians (Florida Communication Journal,\u00a0<\/i>2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
