Prerequisites:
- Willingness to learn theoretical mathematics.
-
Textbook:
Linear Algebra, by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence, fifth edition.
Content:
We will cover most of Chapters 1 – 5. This course includes both theory and computational skills. The student is expected to develop the ability to reason through and coherently write up proofs of theorems as well as develop computational skills. The course serves both as a transition for the mathematics majors from a study of techniques into more conceptual mathematics and as a coherent foundation in linear algebra for engineering and science majors.
Format:
- Lectures. Reading and homework will be assigned and discussed in class mainly during discussion sessions.
You are expected to participate in classroom discussions.
Homework will be assigned regularly and discussed in class.
Homework will not be graded. There will be frequent quizzes.
Teaching Assistant:
- The teaching assistant for the class is George Roman https://people.clas.ufl.edu/g-roman/
Tests:
There will be 4 in class tests, and one final. The dates are on the calendar.
Quizzes:
- There will be 7 quizzes. The dates are on the calendar.

Students with disabilities
- Students with disabilities requesting accommodations should first register with the
Disability Resource Center (352-392-8565, https://disability.ufl.edu/) by providing appropriate documentation. Once registered, students will receive an accommodation letter which must be presented to the instructor when requesting accommodation. Students with disabilities should follow this procedure as early as possible in the semester.
Attendance policy
- Students are expected to attend class regularly.
The UF policy on attendance is here: https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx
Honor Code
- UF students are bound by The Honor Pledge which states, “We, the members of the University of Florida community, pledge to hold ourselves and our peers to the highest standards of honor and integrity by abiding by the Honor Code.”
On all work submitted for credit by students at the University of Florida, the following pledge is either
required or implied: “On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid in doing this assignment.”The Honor Code (https://sccr.dso.ufl.edu/policies/student-honor-code-student-conduct-code/) specifies a number of behaviors that are in violation of this code and the possible sanctions. Furthermore, you are obliged to report any condition that facilitates academic misconduct to appropriate personnel.
