With appropriate mathematics, Copernicus might well have done more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Epicycles<\/strong> remained, just as in Ptolemy&#8217;s system.<\/li>\n<li>Copernicus managed to remove the\u00a0<strong>equants<\/strong>, but only by substituting equally ad hoc centers of rotation (the sun was not the center of rotation).<\/li>\n<li>Copernicus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>lunar theory<\/strong> (using a double-epicycle) was a clear improvement over that of Ptolemy.\n<\/li><li>One of the advantages of the heliocentric theory which\u00a0<strong>could have\u00a0<\/strong>been understood and known by Copernicus&#8217; contemporaries was its ability to explain the variations in\u00a0<strong>brightness of planets\u00a0<\/strong>(such as Mars), and the\u00a0<strong>phases\u00a0<\/strong>of the inner planets (Mercury and especially Venus).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>disadvantages\u00a0<\/strong>of the Copernican system&#8211;from the point of view of the 16th-century reader&#8211;included, among others:\n<ol type=\"a\">\n<li>There should be observable\u00a0<strong>annual parallax\u00a0<\/strong>in any heliocentric system, yet none was detected (until 1838).<\/li>\n<li>Loss of Earth&#8217;s unique central position (of theological concern).<\/li>\n<li>By Aristotelian principles&#8211;and there was no replacement as yet for Aristotle&#8211; the heliocentric theory complicated rather than simplified celestial physics.
