{"id":22,"date":"2012-09-05T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T15:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/template\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:05:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:05:28","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/vyates\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<section class=\"fullwidth-text-block\">\r\n\t<div class=\"container px-0 pt-5\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-start\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-12\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Book Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #444444;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 18px\"><i>Politics of the Deformed: the biology of non-citizens in Aristotle&#8217;s best state<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <i>telos<\/i> of both the natural world and human society is the fully actualized human male.\u00a0 The human female falls short of this <i>telos<\/i> in all respects: biological, ethical, and political.\u00a0 Natural slaves and craftsmen, through their assimilation to women, are also precluded from citizenship in Aristotle&#8217;s best state. \u00a0(The January 2015 <em>Arethusa<\/em> article is derived from this project.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sculpture\u00a0Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of my research into ancient sculpting methods, I took a marble sculpture\u00a0class in Carrara, Italy in summer 2014. \u00a0I also participated in a demonstration of\u00a0\u00a0the ancient method of &#8216;pointing,&#8217;
