All students must have completed introductory ancient Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This course serves as an introduction to Plato, teaching students how to develop strategies for translating, and helping them improve their knowledge of ancient Greek grammar and vocabulary by reading passages that illustrate different prose styles and rhetorical techniques.\u00a0 Each day the class will go over assigned readings from Plato\u2019s <em>Apology <\/em>and<em>\u00a0<\/em>review Greek syntax and morphology.\u00a0 In addition, we will consider the cultural, social and historical setting of the trial and execution of Socrates to better understand how Plato represented these events. For a final project, students will deliver an oral presentation that discusses the main topic of their paper due on the last of class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Class Attendance\u00a0(10%): 20% deduction if students arrive later or are unprepared to review readings.<\/li>\n<li>Three One-Hour Examinations: September 25 (20%), October 23\u00a0(20%), November 23 (20%).<\/li>\n<li>Oral Presentation (5%): Each student will deliver a\u00a020-30 minutes oral presentation\u00a0on the topic of their term paper during Week 15 and 16 (December 2 &#8211; December 9).<\/li>\n<li>One Term Paper (25%), approximately 4-6 pages, due on December 9.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weekly\u00a0Schedule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Daily translation of select passages of Plato (click <a href=\"https:\/\/people.clas.ufl.edu\/wolpert\/content-removed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Daily review of Greek syntax and morphology.<\/li>\n<li>During the semester students will study a topic of their choice on Plato&#8217;s <em>Apology<\/em> and Socrates (with feedback from Dr. Wolpert)\u00a0for their oral presentation and term paper.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grading Scale<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A = 93-100%<br>\nA- = 90-92.9%<br>\nB+ =\u00a087-89.9%<br>\nB = 83-86.9%<br>\nB- = 79-82.9%<br>\nC+ = 75-78.9%<br>\nC = 72-74.9%<br>\nC- = 69-71.9%<br>\nD+ = 66-68.9%<br>\nD = 62-65.9%<br>\nD- = 60-61.9%<br>\nE &lt;\u00a060%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course\u00a0Policies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work in this course are consistent with university policies that can be found at: <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ufl.edu\/ugrad\/current\/regulations\/info\/attendance.aspx\">https:\/\/catalog.ufl.edu\/ugrad\/current\/regulations\/info\/attendance.aspx<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Students are required to be honest in their coursework.
