Course Description and Goals
This is the first course of a three part beginning series at the University of Florida. Students will concurrently (1) master the vocabulary, morphology, and syntax in chapters 1-14 of Wheelock’s Latin, and (2) practice in the fluid translation of Latin to English and English to Latin. Students will leave this class prepared to succeed in Latin 2.
Texts
Wheelock, Frederick M. and R. A. LaFleur, Wheelock’s Latin, 7th ed. 2011 Groton, Anne and James May, 38 Latin Stories, 5th ed. 2010
Daily Activities
Written exercises both in class and assigned as homework will reinforce the inflectional patterns of Latin and aid in memorization. You will have regular practice reading Latin, translating into English, and composing Latin sentences. Oral drills and recitation will establish proper pronunciation. We will also have quizzes that will cover vocabulary, grammar, and translation. These are meant to keep you on track and to prepare you for tests. Always be punctual, as quizzes will often be given. Make-ups are not allowed. Check Canvas (lss.at.ufl.edu) for posted assignments and messages.
Attendance
Attendance is required and marked every single day. Come to class on time, and do not leave early. In order to stay on track and build a strong understanding, you must be present for every class. Your grade and overall success greatly depend on your attendance. Make-up quizzes and late homework assignments are not permitted. Only University Excused Absences are acceptable. Notify the instructor BEFORE the missed class, as possible.
