Elements of Set Theory Fall 2014<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Course: <\/strong>Elements of set theory, MHF 4102 and MHF 5107, sections 3276 and 3277<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Grading system: <\/strong>\u00a0There will be four equally weighted take-home assignments (including a take-home final). Attendance will not be taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Contents of the course<\/strong>: The course is divided into four parts covered by the respective take-home assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Axiomatics of set theory. We will go through the list of axioms of set theory with some historical discussion and justification.<\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basic concepts. We develop natural numbers, the theory of finite sets and cardinality in the axiomatic framework. We state the Continuum Hypothesis and discuss the phenomenon of undecidability of mathematical questions.<\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ordinal numbers. We define von Neumann’s ordinal numbers and prove the transfinite induction and recursion theorems.We define cardinal numbers.<\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Descriptive set theory. We develop the notion of Borel and analytic set of real numbers and show that there are analytic sets which are not Borel. This part of the course is very useful in mathematical analysis.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Evaluations are typically open during the last two or three weeks of the semester, but students will be given specific times when they are open.
