PREREQUISITES:

grade of C or better in MAC 2312, MAC 2512 or MAC 3473.
Recommended MAS 3300 or MHF 3202

TEXT:

An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers, 5th edition by Niven, Zuckerman and Montgomery.

MATERIAL TO BE COVERED:

The following is expected to be covered.

WEEKS 1 AND 2 (Jan 9-20): Selections from
Section 1.1, Section 1.2 up to Euclidean Algorithm.

WEEKS 3 AND 4 (Jan 23 – Feb 1) : Selections from
Sections 1.2 and 1.3 from page 16 to page 25.

FIRST TEST Fri, Feb 3

WEEKS 5 AND 6 (Feb 6-17): Selections from
Section 1.3, from pages 26-34 including problems
(time permitting)

WEEKS 7 AND 8 (Feb 20 – Mar 1): Selections from
Sections 1.4 and 2.1, with some problems.

SECOND TEST Fri, Mar 3

WEEKS 9 and 10 (Mar 6 – Mar 10, Mar 20-24):
Selections from Sections 2.1, 2.2 from pages 35-50 ,
including problems (tentative, time permitting)

WEEK 11-12 (Mar 27 – Apr 5) Selections from Sections 2.3,
2.6, and 2.7, 2.8 (tentative, time permitting)

THIRD TEST Fri, Apr 7

WEEK 13-15 (Apr 10-20; Mon, Apr 24) Selections from Sections 2.8,
3.1, 3.2, 3.6, 4.2, 4.3 (tentative, time permitting)

FOURTH TEST Wed, April 26

GRADING:

GRADING SCALE
No letter grades will be assigned to any of
the four tests. However, after the
scores of the four tests are added, letter
grades for the course will be assigned.
They are expected* to be assigned as per the
following scale [square brackets indicate closed intervals]!:
A [96%-100%]
A- [92%-95%
B+ [88%-91%]
B [84%-87%
B- [80%-83%]

NOTE: Regarding the interval [80, 100], I have divided
it into five equal sub-intervals for the five letter grades.

C+ [75%-79%]
C [65%-74%]
C- [60%-64%
D+[55%-59%]
D [50%-54%]
D- [45%-49%]
E below 45%

*I say “expected” above because I expect the
class average to be around 80%.

The course grade will be based on
Four in-class tests each worth 25% of the grade.
Tests are not cumulative.
4 x 25% = 100% total
