Interrogating Allyship: Accountability of White Counseling Psychologists to People of Color and Indigenous Individuals

Abstract:

For white counseling psychologists, a critical engagement with their white privilege is mandatory for effective ally development and, therefore establishing trust with POCI Clients (Case, 2015). This poster utilizes a systematic literature review examining white allyship and advocacy within counseling psychology in connection with specific therapeutic needs for POCI Clients. Articles were found using PsycINFO and EBSCOhost with the search terms “white allyship model,” “white counseling psycholog*,” and “counseling People of Color.” The inclusion criteria for articles was (1) addressing impacts of systemic racism in counseling psychology, (2) being written in English within a United States populations, (3) being published in the past 25 years, and (4) being peer-reviewed articles. Twenty articles were examined based on their relevance to the aim of the study. Key findings are a call to action for white counseling psychologists to hold themselves accountable to the liberation of POCI Clients.
