Meteorology as a Career

This page is under development. For now, please check out the following resources if you are interested in meteorology as a career.

If you are a current or prospective student at UF, and you wish to chat about this career field in more detail, I would be happy to do that. Other faculty you may wish to contact include:

Stephen Mullens, Lecturer, Geog. stephen.mullens@ufl.edu

Corene Matyas, Professor, Geog. matyas@ufl.edu

Requirements for a degree in meteorology can be found via the American Meteorological Society, the National Weather Service.

Required courses to earn the ‘American Met Soc Certified Broadcast Meteorologist’ seal can be found here

The AMS seal applies to broadcast meteorologists only, and is awarded to scholars who have completed a meteorology degree or the coursework that essentially conforms to a meteorology degree. This seal indicates that the recipient is certified to have the depth of knowledge commensurate with the title of ‘meteorologist’.

A list of current degree programs around the U.S. are found here

Note that the list of programs shows you whether they meet National Weather Service (NWS) requirements or not. A program that does not meet the requirement will generally mean that the student is ineligible for a federal forecaster position and must take additional coursework or complete a graduate degree.
