SPN4830 – Introducción a la dialectología hispánica

Description and Goals
Este curso explorará los rasgos lingüísticos que caracterizan las diferentes variedades del español de Hispanoamérica, España, Estados Unidos y África. Está diseñado para abordar, mediante una metodología dialectológica, la historia y expansión geográfica del español como lengua hablada en diferentes partes del planeta. Además, aplicaremos los conceptos y temas de la clase siguiendo la metodología de la dialectología moderna.
Proyecto de clase
El objetivo del proyecto de clase es aplicar la metodología y conceptos aprendidos durante el curso en un tema de investigación dialectológico/socionlingüístico. El proyecto constará de 2 fases:
1. Creación de un atlas lingüístico: utilizando herramientas como Google Earth, vas a crear un mapa de comunidades del mundo hispano que utilicen variables lingüísticas de interés (e.g. voseo, aspiración de la /s/, leísmo, etc.).
2. Análisis dialectométrico: Mediante esta práctica, podrás analizar cuantitativamente datos sociolingüísticos para medir diferencias dialectales de dos comunidades del mundo hispano. Para este trabajo, utilizaremos herramientas en línea que nos ayudaran determinar científicamente estas diferencias (http://www.gabmap.nl/).

SPN 3224 – El detective español

Description and Goals
The goal of this course is to apply problem-solving techniques and the knowledge of the Spanish language and culture to solve mysterious cases. You will work in independent detective teams to analyze different situations through forensic linguistic methodologies and provide evidence that will help to solve fictitious mysteries. The rubric for this class includes:
1. Design of your own mysterious case for the class: Students will design fictitious cases so that other detective teams solve the puzzle by using the clues you present.
2. Design of your own escape room scenario: Detective teams will design their own escape room scenarios of a fictitious case. This is the final project of the class.
