Areas of Interest/Research

Gender and Politics; Gender-based Violence; Latin America

My research on violence against women in politics explores the relationship between efforts to improve the quality of democracy and the increasing reports of violence and harassment directed at women in electoral politics. My current book project analyzes violence and harassment against women politicians in Latin America, the role of women activism in bringing attention to this problem, and the development and effectiveness of state measures to end it.

I am also working on a project (with PhD students Ayu Rahmawati and Marcelline Amouzou) entitled Women of Autocracy. In this project we explore the ways in which women autocrats or women who are close to authoritarian leaders, support or help maintain autocratization processes or authoritarian regimes. We won the 2023 Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics.

I was also part of a collaborative research project on Human Rights in the Americas. This project, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Minnesota and Rutgers University – Newark, explored the relationship between perceptions of and engagement with the justice system in Colombia and Chile.

In 2024 I was named one of the Mellon Emerging Faculty Leaders for my commitment to promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion at the University of Florida.

In addition to my academic work I have collaborated with the Inter-American Commission of Women of the Organization of American States, the National Democratic Institute, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, and have participated in Experts’ Meetings on Violence against Women in Politics organized by UN Women and OAS.
