MAP 4305/5304 DIF EQUA EG & PHY SCI/INTERMED DIFF EQUATNS (Summer A 2020)

  • Instructor: Dr. Mengying Xiao, Little Hall 321
  • Meeting time and location: MTWThF  2:00 – 3:15PM  online live lectures
  • Office hours: MW 3:15-4:15PM (online) or by appointment
  • email: m.xiao@ufl.edu

Prerequisites:

MAP 2302 is required (how to solve first order and second order linear ordinary differential equations) and a course in Linear Algebra would be helpful (not required). You will need a good working knowledge of Calculus 1, 2 and 3 (as well as precalculus algebra and trigonometry). In particular, you will be expected to know integration techniques (integration by parts); the chain rule; partial fractions; partial derivatives; and the algebra, calculus, and general properties of sines, cosines, and exponentials. If you are weak in any of these areas, or it’s been a while since you took calculus, you will need to spend extra time reviewing or relearning that material. Mistakes in prerequisite material will be graded harshly on exams.

Textbook:

Fundamentals of Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, the 7th edition, Addison-Wesley/Pearson (Publisher), by Nagle, Saff, Snider (required)

Course Description and Goals:

The goal is studying the Series solutions, Matrix methods for systems, and some elementary Partial Differential Equations. We will cover most sections of Chapters 8, 9, and 10 of the textbook, if possible, we may cover a few sections in Chapter 11.

Homework will be assigned regularly on Canvas and discussed in class as needed, but NOT collected or graded. You can discuss homework with your peers and/or me. You are expected to participate in meeting for the discussion of lectures, assigned reading and homework. (Join meetings via links on Canvas-Zoom Conferences.) A huge part of the transition into your professional careers is being where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. I expect your presence at every lecture.

Final Grades:

The final course grade will be determined from 3 midterm exams (25% each, 5 problems, 60 minutes) and several quizzes (25% in total, 1 problem each, 25 minutes). All of them are closed book, closed notes, and not cumulative. Tests problems are similar to homework problems. Doing homework correctly without help leads your success in this course.

During tests, you are allowed to use a scientific calculator (such as TI-84, TI-83, or equivalent models, the general rule of calculator is that it CAN NOT calculate integral and/or derivative of functions.) Also, you can have a 3-by-5 inches formula card (two-sides) made by your own.

All tests will be given one day to complete. For example, if a quiz is given on May 19, you can open this quiz any time on May 19 (0:00AM – 11:59PM), but only get 25 minutes to work on it and I strongly suggest you leave a few minutes in the end (say 5∼ 10 minutes) to scan and upload your work on canvas. (You are allowed to use phone or other scanner technologies to scan your worksheet and transfer your file to computer via UF mail box.) If you enter the quiz later than 11:35PM, you will only have 25 minutes or less as the quiz will automatically close at 11:59PM. Due to confidentiality, you should NOT discuss anything related to test contents with others except me.

Tentative exam dates: May 22(Friday), June 5(Friday), June 19(Friday).

HonorLock:

We will use Honorlock for online tests. There is a practice quiz under Quizzes on Canvas, please use it to get familiar with this tech. Here are some useful links for you to start honorlock:
Honorlock Guideline.(Restrictions during the tests.)
Honorlock Student Guide (the same guide that is in Canvas when they start the test)
Proper Room Scan (how to do a proper room scan)
honorlock.com/support (Links to an external site.)(students can test their system here and contact support).
In order to avoid being flagged during tests, please CENTER your face in camera all the time.
Since we mainly have free response problems, you need to prepare 5 blank papers for an exam and 1 blank paper for a quiz. In the end of tests, you have to scan and upload your worksheet. I would suggest you leave at least 5 minutes to do so. You may upload all your work into one file and upload it, or you may upload answer to the corresponding problem, whichever you feel comfortable. Here are some APPS that allow you to combine your work into one file, CamScanner, Adobe Scan, Scanbot, Microsoft Office Lens, Evernote Scannable, Google Drive, TapScanner, PhotoScan, TurboScan, and so on.
If you have any questions related to Honorlock, you can contact them by 844-841-LOCK.

Grading Scale:

The letter grade is assigned using the scale:
A ≥ 90 > B+ ≥ 85 > B ≥ 80 > C+ ≥ 75 > C ≥ 70 > D+ ≥ 65 >D ≥ 60 > E

Course Policy:

  • A huge part of the transition into your professional careers is being where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. I expect your presence at every lecture.
  • Students requiring accommodation for disabilities must make arrangements through the Disability Resource Center.
  • Students are expected to provide feedback on the quality of instruction by completing online evaluations. Typically this process takes place during the last weeks of the semester, students will be given specific times when they are open. The results of the evaluations are available when they are tabulated.
  • The student should be familiar with the University’s Academic Honesty Policies. https://sccr.dso.ufl.edu/policies/student-honor-code-student-conduct-code/
  • Makeup exams will only be given for legitimate reasons like a serious illness, or a University excused absence. However, you MUST provide me with official written documentation PRIOR to the start of the test.
