maa4402/5404 Spring 2021 SYLLABUS

This course has both face to face and simultaneous synchronous online versions using Zoom. It uses canvas.
To protect student privacy, class meetings will not be recorded.Instructor and office hoursJames Pascoe Class Period 6 MWF, OH Period 7M or by appt.Complex numbers, analytic functions, Cauchy-Riemann equations, harmonic functions, elementary functions, integration, Cauchy-Goursat theorem, Cauchy integral formula, infinite series, residues and poles, conformal mapping. Credit will be given for, at most, MAA 4402 or MAA 5404. Prereq: (MAC 2313 or MAC 3474) and MAP 2302 with minimum grades of C.

Homework/Quizzes

There will be a weekly quiz / homework check. You will either be asked to do a problem similar to a homework problem OR asked to take a photo of a specific homework problem.

Exams.

There 3 exams (Jan 29, Mar 5, Apr 2) given in class on a Friday and a 1 final exam. (

Final Exam: 4/28/2021 @ 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM)

Attendance

Attendance is required. Attendance will be taken at least 8 times. You must be present for at least 5 of these checks. This requirement may be waived in extenuating circumstances.

Grading

Exam 1 = 12% Jan 29

Exam 2 = 12% March 5

Exam 3 = 12% April 2

Final Exam = 14% Apr 28

Homework = 30%

Attendance = 20%.

Week 4 Review of special functions, with an emphasis on the logarithm.

 

Addendum:

    We expect to hold class in person and online throughout the semester. However, there may be days that due to illness, other emergency, or extenuating circumstances that class is held in an all online or even asynchronous formal. While we expect such instances to be infrequent, we apologize in advance.
    Additionally, in-person students may opt to attend online. However, if you signed up for in-person, you are both taking up a seat that an online person might have wanted and may be paying less than your online peers. Under no circumstances may you remove your mask in the classroom or in the walkway outside. Additionally, if you are feeling ill for any reason, perhaps not due to COVID-19, you must attend online.
