Mental Health Outcomes, Activism, Collective Esteem, Critical Consciousness and Positive Identity Development In a Sample of Transgender and Gender Diverse Latinx People: An Expressive Writing Intervention Study

We partnered with Dr. Kirsten Gonzalez from University of Tennessee-Knoxville to explore the effectiveness of an Expressive Writing (EW) Intervention in terms of processing traumatic experiences and perceived stress among Trans Latinx Immigrants. EW has the potential to improve psychological outcomes and overall well-being through the means of individuals collectively sharing and discussing similar experiences that are perceived to be traumatic or distressing.

Latinx Transgender Sociopolitical Context, Community Resilience, and Resistance

We partnered with Dr. Kirsten Gonzalez from University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Dr. Cristalís Capielo Rosario from Arizona State University to understand the factors that contribute to or prevent well-being among Latinx transgender individuals as a result of current oppressive sociopolitical context and how Latinx cultural values and beliefs and community facilitate resilience and resistance.

Black Transmasculine People: Experiences of Community Support

This project was led by ¡Chévere! doctoral student Gabe Lockett. This study explores how COVID-19 and the current display of anti-Blackness has influenced Black trans masculine individuals’ experiences of support and community. Additionally, this study also seeks to understand the impact of collectively gathering for Black trans masculine people in sharing narratives about community experiences in the context of COVID-19 and anti-blackness.

Black Trans Youth Activists’ Wellbeing Among Anti-Black Racism, Trans-Specific Violence, and COVID-19

This project was led by ¡Chévere! doctoral student Jules Sostre. The aim of this study is to explore the impact of increased anti-Black racism, transgender-specific violence, and the COVID-19 pandemic within the last year on the wellbeing of Black Trans youth Activists. Additionally, this study is exploring how activism has impacted the wellness of Black Trans you activists throughout this last year.

Being a Latinx Bi+/Plurisexual Individual: Disclosure of Sexual Orientation, Family, and the Role of Latinx Cultural Values, Beliefs, and Tradition

This project was being led by ¡Chévere! undergraduate student Marian Hernandez! The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences and personal narratives of bi+/plurisexual Latinx individuals within the context of their families and their culture overall. The study aimed to identify and interpret themes specific to Latinx cultural values in relation to sexual orientation, and more specific, bi+/plurisexuality.
